This unit caters to patients recovering from strokes, brain injuries, neurosurgical procedures, seizures, and other complex neurological conditions. Nurses in the Neuro Step-Down Unit are trained in advanced neurological assessments, monitoring of neuro-specific symptoms, and the use of specialized equipment, such as intracranial pressure monitors and continuous EEG. With a focus on early rehabilitation and recovery, the nursing staff works closely with a multidisciplinary team, including neurologists, neurosurgeons, physical therapists, and speech therapists, to provide comprehensive care that supports patients in regaining function and transitioning to less intensive care settings. -BJC Registered Nurse Career Ladder:

Recognizing its excellence in nursing care, Barnes-Jewish Hospital was the first adult hospital in Missouri to be certified as a Magnet Hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.The Neuroscience Progressive Care Unit (PCU) is a 21 bed unit dedicated to the care of patients in need of specialized nursing care at a critical point in their healthcare journey, where they are at high risk for clinical deterioration. - Progressive care, with lower nurse patient ratios, allows for frequent assessment, intervention, treatment and specialized monitoring. -The unit cares for pre and postoperative neurosurgical, neuro-medicine and stroke patients with complex needs using a team approach with nurses, charge nurse and patient care techs. - Bedside, central monitoring, and remote telemetry are standard for all PCU patients. Many resources are available to nurses on this unit, including: -Nurse Practitioners, Nurse Mananger, Assistant Nurse Managers and a Nurse Educator. - Additionally this nursing team collaborates with and are supported by a wide array of the multidisciplinary providers, physicians and pharmacists.A specialized orientation is provided to prepare nurses to care for the neuroscience patient as well as training specific to Progressive Care. - Ongoing education and professional development is supported and encouraged. -Attention to nursing patients with the provision of excellent outcomes is what drives the work on this unit. Preferred QualificationsRole PurposeUnder the direction of manager, plans, directs, and coordinates activities of a unit on a designated shift. Performs direct patient care as needed and functions as clinical resource to nursing and support staff. Assesses, plans, evaluates and documents the nursing process of assigned unit as needed. -Responsibilities
        • Facilitates identification and resolution of gaps in care from hospitalization, at discharge, and into the ambulatory care setting. Critically assess patient data to proactively mitigate impending changes in condition and establishes consults to interprofessional team as appropriate.
        • Leads the development and implementation of complex individual plans of care with defined goals in collaboration with other members of the interprofessional team and the patient, family, or caregiver in accordance with the established guidelines and standards of nursing care. Plan of care reflects application of expert holistic clinical knowledge and skill to anticipate and prioritize complex care needs, anticipate barriers, incorporating interprofessional team and caregiver/family input, and identifies opportunities to improve patient outcomes.
        • Actively utilizes and champions scientific inquiry for evidence-based practices (e.g., participates in journal club, facilitates practice change based on new knowledge, recommends new standards of care or revisions to current standards, conduct a literature search to support unit or organizational goals, disseminate new knowledge obtained from relevant conference or continuing education). Explore opportunities to advance nursing practice (e.g., support a community service health event as a representative of the healthcare profession, patient/family education group, community advisory board, member of Ethics Advisory Committee, serve as adjunct faculty, leadership board in specialty organization).
        • Analyzes gap in practice standards and provides feedback to peers in collaboration with leadership to enhance safe patient care. Leads the evaluation of the patient and family experience, and adjusts care provided to improve patient satisfaction and quality of care.
